Key Largo, Florida |
|||||||||||||||||||||||
Key Largo is the northernmost island in the Florida Keys chain of islands. It is the first island that you can stop at when driving south along US 1 from Miami toward Key West. Although seemingly overrun by strip malls, Key Largo actually is home to the largest collection of Scuba Diving sites in the Keys. It also is home to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, which hosts 170 acres of trails, 75 square miles of underwater reef as well as a 30,000 gallon aquarium.
Being 33 miles long, Key Largo is the largest of the Florida Keys . It was the namesake of the 1948 hit movie "Key Largo" starring Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall and Edward G. Robinson, directed by John Huston. Eventhough the movie bears the name of the island, in reality, very little of the movie was filmed in Florida at all ... Still, this was my very first introduction to the Florida Keys, and boy did it sure ignite my imagination !
