Kaanapali, Maui

The resort area of Kaanapali is located on the west side of Maui (on the Northern part of the island).

There are several hotels and condos lining the beachfront walking path. Most of the big hotel chains are represented here. Such as: Hyatt Regency Maui, Maui Marriott Resort and Ocean Club, Westin Maui, the Ritz-Carlton and the Sheraton Maui. Additionally, there are some that offer a more local flavor: Royal Lahaina, Kaanapali Beach Hotel, Maui Kaanapali Villas, and Whaler. My personal favorite is the Kaanapali Alii (actually the Alii is a condo complex, but there are many rentals available).

The hotels host several very good restaurants and bars. There are even luaus put on weekly for your enjoyment.

Walking along the boardwalk is frequent event. It leads one past all of the beachfront hotels and pools, as well as leads to a small shopping center - Whaler's Village (this is one of the few places in Kaanapali to get snacks and refreshments to go). This center has numerous shops - from Tommy Bahamas to art galleries to an ABC convenience store.

Kaanapali Beach, Maui, Hawaii

Kaanapali Beach is actually about 1 mile long. At the North end of the beach is a volvacic hill formation called Black Rock. In recent years, more resorts and hotels have been built to the North of Black Rock, making Kaanapali Beach seem actually bigger than it was once thought to be.

The beach faces West and on most days you can actually see the island of Molokai in the distance.

At several spots along the beach, there are vendors that, for a nominal fee, will rent you snorkel equipment, umbrellas and/or beach chairs.
