St. Croix is a leeward island in the lesser Antilles of the Northern Carribean. It has been a possesion of the United States since 1917. At just under 83 square miles, St. Croix is the largest of the US Virgin Islands. The island makes up a county of the US Virgin Islands, however the territory capitol is Charlotte Amalie, on the island of St. Thomas.
St Croix is located approximately 90 miles East of Puerto Rico. It has 2 main towns: Christiansted and Frederiksted, with approximate populations of 3,000 and 830 respectfully (although the population for the subdistrict surrounding Frederiksted is closer to 3,750). The island has a total population of around 60,000.
Christiansted is located on the Northern coast of St Croix. It is where you will find most of the dive operations and tourist traps. Frederiksted, nick-named "Freedom City" by the locals, is located on the Western tip of the island, closest to Puerto Rico.
At 1,165 feet above sea level, Mount Eagle is the highest point on the island. On the East coast of St. Croix lays Point Udall, the Easternmost spot in the United States. There is a monument at Point Udall which is called the Millennium Monument. It is actually a large sundial that was setup to mark the first sunrise in the US for the year of 2000. |
